Erdogan: Turkey has finalized S-400 purchase, placed deposit

Erdoğan slams NATO worries on Russian S-400 deal

The S-400 is Russia's next-generation, most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system.

"They went insane because we made the S-400 agreement".

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has dismissed criticism from his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies over his country's purchase of Russia's strategic S-400 missile defense systems, saying Ankara would not "wait for" the Western military alliance to help Ankara with security affairs.

Erdogan's deal with Russian Federation, for which he said a deposit has already been paid, is worth about $2.5 billion, the BBC News reported. "We are taking and will take all our measures on the security front", Erdoğan said during a meeting with mayors from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Ankara. What were we supposed to do, wait for you?

"I can assure that all the decisions made for this contract strictly comply with our strategic interests", Vladimir Kozhin, an aide to Putin, told the Russian state news agency TASS, according to broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

"No NATO ally now operates the S-400", the official noted, adding that: "NATO has not been informed about the details of any purchase".

Turkey, whose relations with its allies have frayed in recent months, said it opted for the S-400 because Western companies had offered no "financially effective" alternative.

Turkey faced similar worries during the Iran-Iraq War and the First and Second Gulf Wars due to the ballistic missiles possessed by those countries.

Turkey has been developing stronger ties with Russian Federation and souring on its relationship with the United States, which has supported the YPG Syrian Kurdish rebels during the Syrian civil war, the BBC News reported.

Erdogan has been critical of Washington for supporting Kurdish groups in Syria that it says are responsible for terror attacks inside Turkey. As the dispute unfolded, the United States in 2015 withdrew its Patriot missiles from Turkey's border with Syria after a two-year deployment.
