Elon Musk Reveals Hilarious SpaceX Blooper Reel Of Explosive Landings

The 60-second SpaceX blooper video titled "How not to land an orbital rocket booster", which is set to the Monty Python theme song, shows the company's rockets crashing, exploding and falling over, underling how hard it has been to get them to finally land safely. The rocket fail greatest hits video shows humility and instructs those who think everything Musk touches turns immediately to gold. As the footage moves from it bursting into a jagged ball of flames in the sky to Musk surveying the burning debris on the ground, the text says, presumably in his voice: "Rocket is fine?" and then answers the question with: "It's just a scratch".

There's plenty of humor here as the subtitles cover all the causes of failures, from "sticky throttle valve" to "well, technically it did land. just not in one piece". The September 2016 launch pad explosion, which not only destroyed a Falcon 9 rocket but also the Israeli communications satellite it was carrying, was a notable omission. Instead, it's created a fantastic video supercut of all of its most epic crashes, explosions, and shortcomings. Watching things go boom is always a good way to waste two minutes, but it's also satisfying to see the progress SpaceX made from first attempting a "soft water" landing as a proof of concept to nailing the robo-barge landing with aplomb.

Thus far, only the primary boost stage rockets have successfully been reused but, according to Musk, when the upper stage and fairing follow, costs will drop by a factor of more than 100.

There is, for example, a rocket booster landing attempt from August 2014 which failed due to a malfunctioning engine sensor. But, like every innovation in history, SpaceX's first attempts weren't exactly an outstanding success.

Full rocket reusability is an essential part of SpaceX's plans for Mars, too. It is among the few private and government ventures that aim to carry cargo and people to the Red Planet and other places beyond Earth's atmosphere.
