Why is Maryam Nawaz unhappy despite winning NA-120 by-election? See video

Maryam Nawaz chaired corner meeting of PML-N regarding by-election in NA-120

Victory by Kulsoom Sharif, who is now receiving medical treatment in London, was declared by her daughter Sunday in front of supporters at the head office of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party in Lahore.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also extended heartiest congratulations to PML-N candidate Begum Kulsoom Nawaz on the victory in by-polls NA-120. Maryam Nawaz Sharif, campaigning for her ailing mother, hailed the victory as a knock on "the powers that be"-clearly pointing to the Pakistan Army".

Maryam Nawaz ran her mother's campaign for her as Kulsoom Nawaz is now undergoing treatment for cancer in London. "Your votes have defeated the visible and invisible forces behind the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif", she said.

The highly-contested election has been viewed as a litmus test to see how the SC verdict affected those who have elected Nawaz to office thrice in since 1990.

Kulsoom Nawaz stood in place of her husband Nawaz Sharif, who was disqualified from office in July over a corruption inquiry. Sharif denies any wrongdoing.

"It's very hard for them to take this from us", said Sohail Butt, 48, a PML-N voter in the Mozang area of the city. "PTI has not only fought well but is in the lead so far from a constituency where PML-N has always won".

Long lines of voters were seen at numerous NA-120 electoral constituency's 220 polling stations in the eastern city, capital of Punjab province, on Sunday. (Shahbaz Sharif and family carefully made a decision to be out of the country during the by-polls and observers noted lack of local infrastructure development in the constituency.) This, in the eyes of many commentators, meant the end of the PMLN and the beginning of the rise of PTI in the 2018 national elections.

A close contest was observed between PTI's candidate Dr Yasmin Rashid and Kulsoom Nawaz. She concealed her properties and did not disclose a United Arab Emirates iqama (work permit) attached with her nomination papers, therefore she is ineligible to participate in the by-election under Articles 62 and 62 of the Constitution, the application said.

There are more than 320,000 voters taking part in the vote, which for the first time in Pakistan's history will be conducted using Biometric Voter Verification Machines in some the constituency's 220 polling stations, Dawn News reported.
