Equifax Suffered Breach Before Massive May Hack

Equifax data breach results in C-Level resignations

We strongly encourage anyone who thinks they may be affected by the Equifax breach to log onto the company's website or call the consumer information line.

It may also bear on the investigation into unusual stock sales by several Equifax executives in the days following the discovery of the May incident.

Equifax has been under intense scrutiny for almost two weeks since disclosing the breach, which went unnoticed for more than a month before it was discovered at the end of July.

"Mandiant has investigated both events and found no evidence that these two separate events or the attackers were related".

The earlier breach, first reported by Bloomberg, was discovered by Equifax in March.

Connecticut Attorney General George Jepsen and more than 30 others in a state group investigating the breach acknowledged that Equifax has agreed to give free credit monitoring to hack victims but pressed the company to stop collecting any money to monitor or freeze credit.

Specialist blog Krebs on Security was one of the few outlets to cover the breach at the time - when Equifax initially disclosed the hack to customers in May, two months later. Equifax claims the executives did not know about the data breach when they sold their shares. Scammers who get ahold of the data could use it at any time - and with 143 million to choose from, they may be patient.

"This is about making sure companies like Equifax do right by the consumer, by restoring trust, security, and privacy to millions of Americans", Sen.

Equifax said it became aware of a security intrusion on July 29, and executives in the company sold approximately $1.8 million worth of stock in early August.

The data included names, email addresses and telephone numbers but not street addresses or financial data, Equifax said. The flaw had been discovered and fixed by Apache in March, but Equifax had not applied the patch to its own systems by May. This investigation has been identified as a priority for the Privacy Commissioner, as the data breach continues to remain a worry for many Canadians, especially those with dealings in the U.S.
