In UN speech, president suggests foreign policy views are evolving. We'll see

The Contradiction Buried in Trump's Iran and North Korea Policies

Asked about increasing the penalties on President Kim Jong Un's regime, Trump said, "We will see".

The United States has separately imposed unilateral sanctions, some of which target firms from China which is the primary economic partner of North Korea.

Hours after Kim released his statement, North Korea's foreign minister said the country may be planning to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific, the AP reported.

Earlier on September 19, Trump in his first address to the UNGA, attacked North Korea and termed its supreme leader Kim Jong-un as "a rocket man, who is on a suicide mission".

Trump signed an executive order on Thursday boosting the United States' ability to sanction foreign banks, individuals and companies that facilitate trade with North Korea.

Mr Trump also saluted China's central bank for what he said was a move to stop its banks from trading with North Korea. The dictator said he is "thinking hard" about what kind of reaction Trump could have possible expected when he delivered those remarks.

Pyongyang has been slapped with even tougher United Nations sanctions after it conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on 3 September, prompting Trump to use "fire and fury" if necessary and not ruling out military intervention.

In recent months, the North has launched a pair of intercontinental missiles believed capable of striking the continental United States and another pair that soared over Japanese territory.

Trump would make the announcement about economic penalties on Friday during a meeting NY with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, USA officials said.

President Donald Trump on Thursday announced new financial sanctions targeting North Korea as his administration seeks to build global support for more aggressively confronting the rogue nation, whose escalating nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities have reached what US officials consider a crisis point.

President Trump signed an executive order on Thursday created to choke North Korea's economy.

Earlier on Thursday, Ban Ki-Moon called for an easing of tensions over North Korea, saying that the risk of accidental war was high.

"North Korea's reckless pursuit of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles threatens the entire world with unthinkable loss of human life..."

The letter, issued in the leader's own name, was unusual for North Korea.
