Federation Internationale de Football Association looks set to lift ban on poppies

Football lawmakers IFAB to lift poppy ban

FIFA has reportedly sent a proposal to its football associations that would revise provisions that banned the use of the poppy symbol on the jerseys of British teams.

England and Scotland wore poppies on their kits for a friendly at Wembley Stadium previous year on November 11 - Armistice Day - to commemorate British Commonwealth forces who have died on duty since World War I.

Prime Minister Theresa May hit out at what she called the "outrageous" Fifa ban, telling MPs in the House of Commons: "Our football players want to recognise and respect those who have given their lives for our safety and security".

England are due to play two World Cup qualifiers in early October and then may play Germany in a friendly at Wembley in November and it is understood the German FA has given permission for the wearing of poppies.

England is planning to play Germany in a friendly at Wembley around Armistice Day, assuming Gareth Southgate's side doesn't have to contest a playoff to qualify for the World Cup.

According to reports, Federation Internationale de Football Association sent out a draft proposal to its member nations last week with revised provisions that would see use of the poppy permitted on the condition that opposing teams and competition organisers accepted a request for its use in advance.

But the ban is now set to be lifted by world football's governing body.

Football's world governing body told England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales that they were not allowed to incorporate it into their kits during World Cup qualifiers previous year.

The Football Association has declined to comment until a change has been fully approved by IFAB.

England and Scotland were punished for attempting to circumvent (unsuccessfully) the law by wearing the poppy on a black armband, while Wales were stung for allowing some of their fans to wear the poppy inside the stadium.

The issue looked likely to be pursued in the courts at one stage after Fifa sanctioned the UK's football associations for using the poppy late previous year.

As a result of this, the United Kingdom associations are no longer expected to pay the fines they were hit with past year.
