Kashmir's longest surviving militant commander killed

India kills Kashmir's ‘longest-surviving militant'

Official sources confirmed to Mirror that Qayoom Najjar was leading a group of terrorists, and after the encounter started, the group went back after Qayoom was killed.

He was summoned to Pak-administered Kashmir by Hizb chief Syed Salahuddin to sort out differences and was returning to Kashmir on his directions to take charge of and revive the "Hizbul Mujahideen whose commanders of North Kashmir Pervaiz Wani and of South Kashmir Yasin Yatoo were killed recently".

The officer further said Najar was called to the base camp in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir by his handlers in 2015.

He carried a bounty of Rs 10 lakh bounty on his head, said the police official.

He briefly fell out with the Hizbul and the Hurriyat leadership in 2015 when he orchestrated multiple attacks on mobile towers and killed some civilians affiliated with the Hurriyat. He rose through the ranks of terrorists after 2003 following the killing of the then Hizbul Mujahideen Chief Commander Abdul Majid Dar, who had entered into a dialogue process with the Government of India.

The longest serving Hizbul commander, Qayoom Najar joined militancy at the age of 16. After his release, Najar recycled into the militancy in 1995.

Najar, 39, had been an active part of terrorist operations since 1999.

"He belonged to Batapora in Sopore town". According to an intelligence officer, Qayoom changed his appearance by using wigs and impersonation to deceive the security agencies.

Lashkar e- Islam Chief was trying to infiltrate from Lachipora in Uri when he was gunned down. The posters even targeted Hurriyat leaders and blamed them for being in league with intelligence agencies and responsible for killing of some militant commanders.
