More reports of sexual violence against Rohingya — UN agency

ASEAN sidesteps non-interference principle

"The government-organized visit was postponed to next week because of weather conditions", a spokesman for the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Myanmar said, without giving further details. "More than ever, the world needs to take a strong stand and push Myanmar and its security forces to end the horrors they are inflicting on the Rohingya population", said Tirana Hassan.

In October 2016, following an attack on the Myanmar border police, the military started a security crackdown on Rohingya, blaming them for the rebellion.

Some 480,000 self-identifying Rohingya Muslims have now fled across the border to Bangladesh after the Myanmar Army launched clearance operations in the wake of deadly attacks by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) on August 25.

An eminent Hindu group in the USA has expressed concern over reports that a mass grave containing the bodies of 28 Hindu villagers has been discovered in conflict-wreaked Myanmar's Rakhine state.

According to several humanitarian groups, in addition to those who have fled to Bangladesh, many people were displaced within Rakhine and hundreds of thousands lack food, shelter, and medical care. Earlier this week, it said bodies of 45 Hindus killed by Rohingya militants had been found in a mass grave.

Access to the area by relief agencies and global media has been heavily controlled by Myanmar's army and government.

The United States said the army response to the insurgent attacks was "disproportionate" and the crisis raised questions about Myanmar's transition to democracy after decades of military rule.

On Wednesday, UN refugee chief Filippo Grandi called on the Myanmar authorities to halt the violence as he said that Rohingya refugees who fled violence in Myanmar were in desperate need of help.

The British Minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, Mark Field, described the situation as "an unacceptable tragedy" after visiting Myanmar and meeting leaders including Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The bodies of 14 Rohingyas have washed up off the coast of Bangladesh.

Myanmar's de facto leader has faced strong global criticism for her government's handling of the crisis.
