Manchester City confirm Benjamin Mendy has torn cruciate ligament

Benjamin Mendy immediately clutches his right knee after going into a challenge on Saturday

The French player sustained the injury during the first half of City's 5-0 victory over Crystal Palace in their Premier League clash at home.

City boss Pep Guardiola said on Tuesday night: "I think it is going to be a major setback".

Real bad news for Benjamin Mendy, the team of France and roughly those who love the centres of qualities.

After initial tests in Manchester, Mendy travelled to Barcelona to see a specialist, where the extent of the damage was confirmed.

Having been signed for a whopping £52 million this summer, it was confirmed on Thursday that Benjamin Mendy had ruptured his ACL and will be out of action for up to nine months.

Despite his prolific form, City should still have plenty of firepower to cope with Aguero's absence from the injuries sustained in a vehicle accident in Amsterdam on Thursday.

But now, after hearing that he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, he's maintained his playful online persona and made fun of his strife.

"We wish him a speedy recovery and we support him in every way".

He joked on his Twitter feed that he would be joining "Injury FC" on loan for a couple of months but hoped to return stronger. City's midweek match against Shakhtar Donetsk saw Fabian Delph fill in Mendy's position, and the only other suitable option ahead of the club's weekend encounter with Chelsea comes in the form of natural right back Danilo.

City released left back Gael Clichy in the summer while Aleksandar Kolarov asked to leave to join Roma.
