Iran, Turkey vow to boost military ties amidst Kurds' independence move

Russia confirms Turkey has made advance payment for S-400s

Turkey will take stronger steps in retaliation for the Kurdish referendum last week, and has already taken some steps to coordinate with the Iraqi central government and Iran, Erdogan said in Tehran. "Meetings will be held next week to discuss the details", he said.

The Turkish top commander, for his part, stressed the need to support the central government in Iraq and preserve the integrity of the Arab country.

The president stated: "Iran and Turkey do not accept separatism and the escalation of ethnic and religious disagreements designed by conspirators and foreigners for our region, and from the point of view of the two countries, Iraq and Syria are integrated countries and we will not accept changing the geographical boundaries under any condition".

Leaders in Tehran and Ankara were staunchly opposed to the referendum, given Iran and Turkey's large Kurdish minorities.

On Sunday, Turkish armed forces chief of staff Gen Hulusi Akar arrived in Tehran.

Iran and Turkey have resolved to work together to ease tension in the crisis-hit Middle East region.

In a televised broadcast Saturday Erdogan claimed that Turkey had been saddened to see some Iraqi Kurds celebrating the independence referendum with Israeli flags.

The illegitimate referendum continues to face sharp opposition from most regional and worldwide actors, many of whom warn that the poll would distract from Iraq's ongoing fight against terrorism and further destabilize the already-volatile region. He also said that de-escalation zones were very important for Turkey.

The Iranian military announced on October 2 it would host joint military exercises with the Iraqi army near the Iraqi Kurdish region. Iran said it will allow Iraqi federal forces to deploy at its border crossings with the region.

Iraq was the biggest crude oil exporter to Turkey in last three years, however in the January to July 2017 period, Iraq's crude oil exports to Turkey decreased 20.5 percent from 5.4 million tons to 4.3 million tons.

Besides, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Shamkhani on Monday slammed the independence referendum by the Kurds, saying the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) adopted an "irresponsible and amateurish approach".

"It was the people who determined their future in the referendum", he said.

He asserted that the referendum was a Zionist plot that benefits the United States.
