Trump threatens to challenge media's broadcast licenses

Trump is'all in for modernization of America's nuclear weapons program according to one person in the July meeting some underground missile command consoles still look like something out of a Cold War movie set

NBC had reported that Trump sought a tenfold increase in the US nuclear arsenal, something Trump had already denied.

According to the officials present, Trump's advisers, among them the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, were surprised. "It was soon after the meeting broke up that officials who remained behind heard Tillerson say that Trump was a "moron". Earlier in the day, Trump on Twitter dismissed that report as "pure fiction" and raised the possibility that he would support stripping the broadcast licenses of news networks that report what he believes to be inaccurate information.

Last week, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders assured reporters, "This is a president who supports the First Amendment".

NBC reported Wednesday that Trump made the comments on July 20 in response to a briefing slide that showed a steady decrease in the U.S.'s nuclear weapons since the 1960s.

Trump's comments, the officials said, came in response to a briefing slide he was shown that charted the steady reduction of USA nuclear weapons since the late 1960s.

If the United States were to increase its nuclear arsenal, that could break with years of doctrine and violate global disarmament treaties that have been signed over the years by every president since the late Ronald Reagan.

The US television network reported that Trump told generals and security aides over the summer that he wanted a "nearly tenfold increase" in the US nuclear arsenal.

Trump's previous comments about nuclear weapons have caused confusion and concern in some quarters.

The report comes as Trump is preparing for an 11-day trip to Asia, where he will seek to bolster worldwide support to pressure North Korea to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile weapons testing. The president reportedly remarked Wednesday: "It is frankly disgusting the press is able to write whatever it wants to write". He said he simply wants the arsenal to be in "tip-top shape" and "perfect shape".

President Donald Trump on Wednesday dismissed a report that said he wants to increase the country's nuclear stockpile by a factor of ten, accusing the press of making it up entirely. Two people familiar with the discussion said the meeting was unproductive to the point that advisers made a decision to continue the talks the next day at the Pentagon with a smaller group.
