Verdict On Ban On Women's Entry In Sabarimala Temple Today

Sabarimala Temple

Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram, Gopalakrishnan said that there are going to be huge security issues if all women are allowed entry.

On November 7 previous year, the Kerala government had informed the apex court that it favoured the entry of women of all age groups in the historic Sabarimala temple.

In February, the top court had indicated that it may refer a plea for allowing entry of women aged between 10 to 50 years in the temple to a five-judge constitution bench. The management of the Sabarimala temple has said earlier the ban on women entry between the ages 10-50 was because they can not maintain the purity on account of menstruation. The ban, the petition says, is discriminatory and violative of Article 14 of the constitution (right to equality). It said Article 25 of the constitution gives the temple the right to manage its own affairs.

Speaking to reporters, Gopalakrishnan said that there are going to be huge security issues if all women are allowed entry. The UDF Government has taken the view that since time immemorial it is followed that the women of ages between 10 and 50 were restricted to enter the historic Sabarimala temple.

The Constitution Bench will deal with questions whether this practice amounted to discrimination against the women.

Among the questions referred to the bench include the question of whether or not any group of people - women in this case - can be prevented from entering a Hindu place of worship according to current laws. "If women came for Darshan we will find it hard to arrange security", he said.

On November 7 previous year, the Kerala government had informed the apex court that it favoured the entry of women of all age groups in the historic Sabarimala temple.

He asked if everyone was trying to make Sabarimala a Thailand by making women between the age of 10 to 50 climb uphill under the challenging weather conditions without any safety. And if so, would it not run afoul of Articles 14 and 15 (3) of the Constitution by restricting entry of women on the ground of sex?
