John Kelly Charms Press At Briefing Urging Them To "Develop Better Sources"

Trump issues ominous 'fake news' tweet about Gen Kelly

'I would just offer to you that although I read it all the time pretty consistently, I'm not quitting today.

And he defended Trump's Thursday morning tweet in which the president threatened to pull federal help from hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, noting, "the whole point is to start to work yourself out of a job".

White House chief of staff John Kelly had a few things to get off his chest.

One former Homeland Security official, who asked for anonymity so that the person could speak candidly, says the pick is a controversial one, and that people at the department are already speaking about leaving if the nomination moves forward.

Kelly said all that isn't true - and that he's not planning on leaving his position or about to be fired, despite the rumors of tension. "I just talked to the president, and I don't think I'm getting fired today", Kelly joked.

This seems unlikely. In August, Trump claimed on Twitter to have ordered the modernization of the USA nuclear arsenal on his first day in office, stating that the current stockpile "is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before". That was the best job I ever had had.

But on Thursday, Kelly tried to put an end to the chatter - at least for now - explaining that his job is simply "really, really hard work".

'I would tell you, this is the hardest job I've ever had.

John Kelly was trotted out before the press to deliver a statement that he isn't going to quit because Donald Trump is a insane man who is pushing him to the brink.

Kelly also took pains to describe how he wished his own performance to be measured - making sure it wasn't counted against him every time the president tweets. "His sense as a man who is outside the Washington arena, a businessman, much more of a man of action, I would say his great frustration is the process he now finds himself [in] because, in his view, the solutions are obvious".

"The American people should be concerned about a state that has developed a pretty good ICBM capability and is developing a pretty good nuclear re-entry vehicle".

"This is really hard work running the United States of America", Kelly said, quickly adding, "I don't run it but I am working for someone who is".

To recap: John Kelly is not mad, and he's neither quitting nor being fired today. The chief of staff did so with a smile and a salute.
