Passengers who fell ill on Tejas Express discharged

Passengers of Tejas Express hosapitalised

At least 26 passenegers aboard the Mumbai-bound Tejas Express from Goa fell ill on Sunday after consuming food served by the Railways' catering wing, IRCTC, the Konkan Railway said.

Train number 22120 was running from Karmali to CSTM, and passengers were served cutlets, omelette and soup.

As per an IRCTC statement, "A show-cause notice has been served on the catering contractor and a strict action is will be taken if found guilty".

According to senior railway officials, the committee spoke to passengers, the AC mechanic, the train conductor and ticket examiners to find out the reason for the passengers throwing up as the initial suspicion was on the food served on the train. All the passengers with symptoms of food poisoning were admitted in a hospital. But on Monday morning, all of them were discharged and transport arranged to send them to Mumbai, said railway officials.

Twenty four passengers travelling on Tejas Express from Karmali to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus have fallen ill after they had food from the pantry vehicle. "It is a regular protocol followed by the IRCTC during such incidents." said the official. Reportedly, six passengers of his group were also admitted to a hospital in Chiplun.

"Total 300 breakfasts (170 vegetarian and 130 non- vegetarian) were been served", the IRCTC said.

He said when three or four people from the group started throwing up, some other passengers travelling in the train had "a psychological effect" and they also felt nausea.

The reports of food poisoning add up the recent railway-related incidents and coincide with the 27th foundation day of the Konkan Railway. "Monitoring is being done to ensure proper assistance", IRCTC said in a statement.

Many passengers who travelled by the Tejas express are fuming with this occurrence and have demanded stern action to be taken against the officials concerned.

Tagged as India's first semi-high speed train, the luxury train boasts of several modern facilities onboard like LED TV and tea/coffee vending machines and high class onboard catering services.
