Up to 50% of Android devices impacted by WPA2 vulnerability

Protocol-level security flaws in WPA2 may affect ALL Wi-Fi devices!

The hackers can unencrypted (non-HTTPS) traffic or compromise your computer by slipping malware into legitimate websites.

As scary as this attack sounds, there are several mitigating factors at work here.

Although this isn't a surefire way to protect yourself from an attack, it's a good idea to stay away from public Wi-Fi networks until the issue has been completely mitigated. In more risky cases, hackers might be able to "take over" your Wi-Fi connection and add malware to otherwise safe sites, Mashable explained. "Else, you could just use LAN for some time", he says, adding that HTTPS traffic will still be hard to intercept with this kind of an attack. While we can't know yet if hackers have actually taken advantage of the vulnerability, its existence puts every Wi-Fi-enabled device at risk. However, Ars Technica reports that Android and Linux users are more vulnerable to severe attacks than Windows or iOS users.

"The weaknesses are in the Wi-Fi standard itself, and not in individual products or implementations", vulnerability discoverer Mathy Vanhoef said in a statement. Google says it is working on a patch, and Microsoft says it's already released a security update to fix the issue.

The only way to safeguard from KRACK is to update the affected products as soon as upgrades become available.

If you have a Wi-Fi network, the Alliance says you should be sure you have installed the latest updates from the company that made your network equipment.

I don't see this becoming a major threat to most users unless and until we start seeing the availability of easy-to-use attack tools to exploit this flaw.

Even if you were bored enough to actually click on the More info button, you would have had to be REALLY bored to even spot a reference to a vague mention of a wireless security update in the last bullet item of the knowledge base article.

Finally, consider browsing the Web with an extension or browser add-on like HTTPS Everywhere, which forces any site that supports https:// connections to encrypt your communications with the Web site - regardless of whether this is the default for that site. While changing the password of your Wi-Fi network does not prevent or mitigate the attack, it's never a bad idea to change the Wi-Fi password, Vanhoef said.
