Three arrested in shooting after speech by white nationalist Richard Spencer

Gainesville police arrested three men for carrying out a shooting following a Thursday afternoon appearance by the white nationalist Richard Spencer at the University of Florida.

There was very little violence during the event itself, with one Spencer supporter getting pushed and punched by protesters.

Tyler Tenbrink, 28, William Fears, 30, and Colt Fears, 28, drove from Texas to Gainesville, Florida, to hear Spencer's speech at the Phillips Center. And even after Spencer's "Unite the Right" rally on a Virginia campus in August devolved into violence and left a woman dead, UF administrators could not prevent his visit, they could only prepare for it.

Just over an hour after his speech ended, three of Mr. Spencer's followers stopped their vehicle in front of a group of anti-racism protesters at a bus stop, police said in a statement. The victim of the shooting heard someone in a moving vehicle shout at a group of people, "Hail Hitler!" along with other hateful chants.

They say Tenbrink fired one shot, hitting the building behind the victim. One of the witnesses copied the Jeep's tag number and alerted authorities, who stopped the men shortly thereafter. The information was relayed to several law enforcement agencies with officers in the area.

"One of the passengers began yelling Hail Hitler and other chants" at the people at the bus stop, according to arrest reports released by the Gainesville Police Department.

An off-duty deputy from the Alachua County Sheriff's Office was on his way home when he spotted the Jeep about 20 miles north of Gainesville.

Police have said that at least two of these men have connections to extremist groups and that Tyler Tenbrink is a convicted felon. Tenbrink got out of the vehicle with a handgun while William Fears and Colton Fears yelled, "I'm going to f--ing kill you", and "Shoot them". Tenbrink went on to recite the "14 words" used as a motto by white supremacists: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children".

Colton and William Fears are being held on $1 million bond.

Fears told the Sun that a man known for driving his vehicle into a crowd of people in the Charlottesville, Virginia, protests "wasn't unjustified". The investigation remains ongoing, Tobias said.
