Two-thirds of baby food tests positive for arsenic

Twins Laura left and Adam are 19 months old. While it might seem like anice idea to parents to treat a twin daughter and son the same way, that’s impossible. The best parents can do is give them both the same care and options and support the choices

Earlier this week the internet was taken by storm when a new study suggested that 80 percent of baby foods and infant formulas contain "alarming" amounts of arsenic, lead, and other unsafe chemicals.

The study by the Clean Label Project also found that a whopping 80 percent of baby formulas contained arsenic. The same study determined 80 percent of baby formula contains the deadly poison as well. Arsenic, a toxin associated with cardiovascular conditions, developmental defects, diabetes, neurotoxicity, skin lesions, and even cancer, was present in almost 80 percent of infant formulas. All we know at this point is that some products tested positive for the above-mentioned chemicals. Among the worst products were specific baby cereals made by Healthy Times, Organix, Gerber, Earth's Best, and Parent's Choice.

The study also found 36 percent of baby food products tested had detectable levels of lead, 58 percent had detectable levels of cadmium and 10 percent had detectable levels of acrylamides.

According to CBS contributors, more than one third of the tested products had lead in them.

In 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed a limit of 100 parts per billion of arsenic in infant rice cereal, but isn't enforcing that limit.

The nonprofit, which advocates for transparent labeling of products, looked at the top-selling formulas and baby food as well as emerging national brands based on Nielsen data. Conversely, the brand report card of Nosh! showed 1.4 stars, while Little Duck Organics got a rating of two stars.

The study was conducted by the Clean Label Project, a non-profit organization seeking to foster consumer transparency.

Arsenic and cadmium are naturally occurring elements found in soil, water and air, so it is not surprising that they are found in food.

The Clean Label Project released a staggering report Thursday that two-thirds of all baby food in the United States tested positive for arsenic.

"It is important for consumers to understand that some contaminants, such as heavy metals like lead or arsenic, are in the environment and can not simply be removed from food", Peter Cassell, a FDA spokesperson.
