Rafael Nadal secures year-end No 1 spot after remarkable 2017 season

Nadal officially pips Federer to 2017 top spot & matches Djokovic's year-end total

The 16-time Grand Slam champion is the oldest man to finish a season at the top of the rankings at the age of 31, having previously achieved the feat in 2008, 2010 and 2013. It is all the more remarkable because Nadal was given to a lot good for the case he has just one year ago.

His absence paved the way for Rafael Nadal, who secured his place at the top of the ATP rankings with victory over Hyeon Chung.

Nadal went into the match knowing victory would give him an unassailable lead as world number one over old rival Roger Federer, after the Swiss legend withdrew before the start of the Paris tournament. It's been an incredible year, ' he said after the match. "But the season is not over", Nadal was quoted on the ATP World Tour website as saying.

Nadal made the decisive break in the eighth game of the second set and bagged a straightforward win on his second match point when 21-year-old Chung sent a forehand long.

Nadal, who has never won the tournament, was a break behind in the opening set before stepping up a gear to win four games in a row.

Frenchman Lucas Pouille kept alive his slim chances of qualifying for London as well with a 6-3 6-4 win against Feliciano Lopez, but No. 12 Kevin Anderson's chances took a dent after a 5-7 6-4 7-5 loss to Spaniard Fernando Verdasco.

But Nadal will be safe in the knowledge that Even with the ATP finals in London yet to be played, 16-time Grand Slam champion Nadal will be firmly at the top of the tree as 36-year-old Federer can not catch him on points.

With no Federer here, the draw is relatively open for Nadal to make a real run at the title, which would bring him closer to a career sweep of Masters events (he also has never won Miami or Shanghai).

Earlier on Wednesday, fourth seed Alexander Zverev was dumped out by Haase in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 second-round defeat.

Overcoming an early break of serve, Mahut took the first set with a forehand victor down the line, breaking Carreno Busta's serve for the second time.

Bulgarian world number eight Grigor Dimitrov, who has already booked his ticket for the Tour Finals, knocked out French favourite Richard Gasquet with a straightforward 6-4, 6-4 win.
