NBC News: Mueller has enough to bring charges in Flynn investigation

Mueller has allegedly collected enough evidence as part of the probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election to file charges against former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his son, according to NBC News. In addition to Mr Manafort and Mr Gates, George Papadopoulos, a former foreign policy adviser to the campaign, has pleaded guilty to lying to law enforcement officials and is reported to have been cooperating with the investigation.

Mr Mueller's team are also said to be looking at whether the former National Security Adviser attempted to have Fethullah Gullen, an elderly Muslim cleric, extradited from the United States to Turkey in exchange for millions of dollars.

Mike Flynn is also at the heart of the obstruction of justice investigation into Trump.

Flynn was paid $500,000 a year ago by the businessman, Ekim Alptekin, who is a member of a Turkish economic-relations board run by an appointee of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Federal investigators are also reportedly looking into allegations Flynn attempted to sidestep the extradition process and send the Turkish cleric Fethullah Gülen, a rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, back to Turkey in exchange for a multi-million dollar fee. Flynn's firm hired SGR as part of its work with Inovo.

It seems that the objective of bringing or threatening to bring charges against Flynn's son is to intimidate Flynn into protecting his son. As of Sunday afternoon, however, it was unclear exactly what charges the younger Flynn might face or what investigators were focusing on.

Trump and his officials downplayed earlier arrests due to their work on the campaign rather than the administration, a charge for Flynn could would see that argument quashed. Flynn did not register with the US Justice Department as a foreign agent until March 2017. Lawyers for the Flynn family did not comment to NBC on the news.

Mueller's additional focus on Flynn Jr.is likely an attempt to coerce his father's cooperation in the investigation, legal experts have said.
