Senior Chelsea figure quits club after a decade at Stamford Bridge

Michael Emenalo

Emenalo, since his promotion to technical director, and director Marina Granovskaia have led Chelsea's transfer activity in recent years.

According to a report on the UK Telegraph, Emenalo made a decision to leave after declining not to engage in a three-way power battle with current Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and Marina Granovskaia who are known not to see eye to eye.

Emenalo, one of owner Roman Abramovich's most trusted advisors, joined Chelsea 10 years ago and was crucial to the club's scouting success during that time.

Emenalo is said to have been a "vital element" at Chelsea under the Russian, having overseen the recruitment of stars such as Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and Cesar Azpilicueta as well as the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, whose departures "frustrated" the former Nigeria worldwide.

Although Emenalo's relationship with Conte was not hard, this is a club with power struggles going on off the pitch.

Chelsea Chairman, Bruce Buck, also added that Emenalo had handed in his papers earlier this week and was leaving only to undertake a new challenge elsewhere.

"He has had a tremendous impact on the club over the past 10 years and this is evident in everything we have achieved", he said.

Emenalo, who played for Notts County in the 1990s and in the first MLS game, has been linked with a role at Monaco.

First Team Head Coach Antonio Conte said: "I am very sorry to see Michael leave Chelsea, and I would like to thank him for all his help and support since I arrived at this club".

In the 10 years Emenalo has been involved with the club, Chelsea has won three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, the EFL Cup, Europa League and Champions League, playing a major part in the assembling of those successful squads.
