S Korea to join three U.S. aircraft carriers in drills

3 US aircraft carriers to enter waters off Korean Peninsula to stage joint drills: S.Korean military

Instead, the USS Nimitz (CVN 68), the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), and the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) will be "deployed rotationally and sequentially" to carry out joint exercises with warships from the ROKN.

The carriers, already operating in the Western Pacific, will sail one by one into the waters east of Korea for the event, it added.

"The training is aimed at restraining North Korea's nuclear and missile provocations and showing our military's strong willingness to act and military preparedness", the JCS said, quoted in the local press.

Three U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier strike groups are scheduled to conduct joint drills with the Republic of Korea Navy (ROKN) over the next few days in a show of force against North Korea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Friday.

A flurry of missile tests from North Korea this year have raised the likelihood of South Korea using the US-built Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) anti-missile system - something China has vehemently opposed.

SEOUL-South Korea will join three US aircraft carrier strike groups in a joint drill scheduled for November 11 to 14, the South's military said on Friday.

The exercises come on the heels of Trump's visits to Seoul and Beijing this week, which were dominated by the question of how to counter Pyongyang's nuclear weapons threat.

In a commentary released Saturday, the Korean Central News Agency, North Korea's official media, criticized the United States for "heightening military tension in the Asia-Pacific region".

The Chinese president also underscored the importance of South Korea-China relations, saying the conditions on the Korean Peninsula were at a "pivotal" juncture.

Xi noted his meeting with the South Korean leader marked a turnaround in South Korea-China relations.

"China insists on the implementation of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability on the Peninsula, and resolving the existing problems through dialogue and consultation", said the Chinese leader.

Though China has backed United Nations sanctions, U.S. officials want Chinese authorities to clamp down on unauthorised trade along the North Korean border.
