Airbus clinches biggest order in its history

Also on Wednesday, Airbus won a $49.5 billion order from Indigo Partners' portfolio of low-priced airlines that include Frontier, Wizz Air, Volaris, and JetSmart.

The surprise 430-aircraft order by Airbus comprises a commitment for 273 A320neos (new engine options) and 157 A321neos.

The end of the year will see flydubai have a fleet of 61 Next-Generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft and Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, in addition to a pipeline of 70 aircraft due for delivery by 2023.

Airbus and Boeing went into the air show with 288 and 605 net orders, respectively.

With the Dubai show winding down, Airbus' mega-sale made up for its disappointment earlier this week when a big sale of A380 jets to Emirates Airline failed to come together.

The flurry of orders for the global rivals came at the Dubai Air Show, one of a series of worldwide events where the two companies like to clinch big deals.

The Airbus aircraft, whose wings are made in the United Kingdom, will be deployed across Indigo's airlines, which also include Frontier in the USA, and JetSmart in Chile.

Indigo Partners is a Phoenix-based private equity firm which owns Frontier Airlines and part of Volaris. If the deal translates into firm orders, it would represent Airbus' biggest sale to a single buyer as measured by the number of airplanes, according to CNN. The 225-aircraft deal, which was worth around $27 billion, was the biggest ever order from the Middle East for single-aisle passenger planes, the company said.

The Dubai Airshow wraps up on Thursday.

"We are honored that Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa's leading carriers, has again selected Boeing airplanes to grow its operations, adding to an order book that includes the 737 MAX and 787 Dreamliner", said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President & CEO Kevin McAllister.

"Just to clarify: This is not an A380 press conference", The Associated Press quoted Leahy as saying.

Boeing had a strong lead on its European rival in total orders for this year going into the Dubai event. That's why the deals here are mostly multi-billion dollar newsworthy ones.
