Anti-Trump truck window decal causes controversy for sheriff

Houston-area sheriff goes after driver with 'offensive' anti-Trump decal

The owner of a pickup truck with a political message against President Donald Trump in the back window that includes the F-word says she has no plans to remove the sign, even though the local sheriff has spoken out against it. The truck is often seen along FM 359, a state highway near Richmond, Nehls wrote.

"We're not going to be arresting anybody, and we're not going to be releasing the name of the person who owns the truck, either", his office says.

"Our Prosecutor has informed us she would accept Disorderly Conduct charges regarding it, but I feel we could come to an agreement regarding a modificiation to it", he wrote. The post included a photo of the white pickup truck with the bumper sticker.

So far, he hasn't received almost as much help finding the owner as he has comments about free speech, the First Amendment, negative decals from the past that had no legal consequences, drinking the Kool-Aid, and suggestions on what law enforcement could be working on instead.

Karen Fonseca says she's been repeatedly stopped by law officers, but that they have no grounds to issue a citation. "It's just our freedom of speech and we're exercising it".

Sheriff Troy Nehls posted a photo of the truck and a sign that reads "F_k Trump and F_k you for voting for him".

"I want to reach out to the owner of this truck and say 'Hey, listen, the last thing we need to do is have any type of confrontation over the language on your truck", said Nehls during a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

"Due to the hate messages he has been receiving toward his wife and children, the sheriff will not be commenting on the matter further", spokeswoman Caitilin Espinosa said by email.

The Texas division of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), an organisation that works to defend individual rights, responded to the sheriff on Facebook, writing: "Constitutional Law 101: You can't ban speech just because it has 'f***' in it". However, Nehls also specifically cited the "offensive language" on the truck as a cause for concern. "They smile. They stop you".

The post has thousands of comments and shares.

District Attorney John Healey disputed Nehls' suggestion that disorderly conduct charges were appropriate in this case, as did free speech advocates. "They want to shake your hand". Fonseca said she's most at odds with the president about his proposed border wall.
