Bob Menendez and a Florida ophthalmologist after jurors said they could not reach a unanimous decision on any charges, with the panel divided over whether the two men engaged in a bribery scheme or were just friends.

"We can not reach a unanimous decision on any of the charges", the missive continued.

The bribery case against Sen.

Sen. Mitch McConnell said in a statement Thursday that Menendez had been indicted on numerous federal felonies and his trial shed light on serious accusations of "violating the public's trust as trust as an elected official, as well as potential violations of the Senate's Code of Conduct".

The seven-woman, five-man jury initially told Walls it was deadlocked Monday after several hours of deliberations. Bob Menendez after the jury deadlocked twice - unable to reach a decision on any of the various counts - in deliberations this week.

After nine weeks of testimony and nearly two weeks of deliberations, the jury in the Bob Menendez trial could not reach a verdict on even one of the 18 counts against the New Jersey senator.

Judge Walls stated in response to issuing verdicts on individual counts it would be "going down the slippery slope of coercion".

He added: "There's no point doing something just to say you've done it".

The jury first told him on Monday they couldn't reach a unanimous verdict on any of the 18 counts in the indictment against Menendez and a wealthy friend.

Gov't asked judge to make partial verdict charge to jury, but judge said it wasn't warranted by note.

The jury deliberations, which began last week, followed eight weeks of testimony. Since then, the jury has not sent a single note or question to the court.

The mistrial also virtually eliminates the possibility that Menendez would resign or be removed from office before Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) leaves office in January 2018, meaning the Republican won't be able to select a replacement and Democrats will retain the seat. We'll see if it lasts. But even if he avoids another trip to court, Menendez could have a tough time running for reelection, even in reliably blue New Jersey.

Prosecutors would not say whether they plan to retry Menendez.

"Certain elements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and of our state cannot stand, or even worse, accept that the Latino kid from Union City and Hudson County could grow up to be a United States senator and be honest", said the 63-year-old son of Cuban immigrants.

Menendez also had harsh words for those who predicted his political doom.

"I want to thank the jury, 12 New Jerseyans who saw through the government's false claims and used their Jersey common sense to reject it", he told reporters outside the courthouse before blasting the Justice Department.
