In the encounter, which took place in Hajin area of northern Bandipore, a Garud commando of the Indian Air Force also got martyred.

The officer who was killed was a commando of Indian Air Force elite's Special Forces unit Garud.

"One soldier has also sustained injuries in the operation", Defence Ministry Spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said. "Weapons and ammunition recovered", DGP SP Vaid tweeted. All the slain militants, including top commander Mahmood Bhai are Pakistani.

The operations come a day after Jammu and Kashmir Police were engaged in a shoot-out in Zakura, which lies on the outskirts of Srinagar.

An Army jawan and a militant were killed in an encounter in Kulgam district on November 14.

During the encounter, clashes erupted in the area between locals and government forces.

"The killing of Mehmood Bhai is a big jolt to LeT and we are hopeful that after this operation, security forces will gain upper hand in Hajin and its adjoining areas again", the officer said. One personnel from the IAF's Garud force was killed in the gun battle while two army personnel were injured. The encounter ended at around 6:50 pm on Saturday, following which internet services in the valley was suspended.
