Iran on Monday dismissed as "worthless" a resolution by Arab League foreign ministers that accused the Islamic republic of "aggression" against Arab states.

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said the Arab nations were "not declaring war on Iran at this stage", but meant to "brief" the matter with global organizations, including the United Nations Security Council.

In Beirut on Monday, Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit said Lebanon should be "spared" from spiralling regional tensions.

The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and Bahrain also held a separate meeting ahead of the main session to discuss a unified stance against Iran.

Lebanese president Michel Aoun, a Hizbollah ally, said Lebanon can not accept suggestions that its government is a partner in acts of terrorism.

In addition to the attempted missile strike, which was repelled by Riyadh's anti-missile defense system, the draft resolution notes the bombing of an oil pipeline in Bahrain as another example of Iranian efforts to undermine regional security.

He said his country was targeted by a total of 80 ballistic missiles fired by Yemen's Shiite rebels since the kingdom in 2015 formed and led a coalition to fight them alongside forces loyal to the internationally recognized government there.

Ghassemi also described the Arab League´s statement as "untrue" and urged Saudi Arabia to "immediately stop its savage aggression against the Yemeni Arab people" and "stop its pressure on Lebanon, Qatar and the entire region".

Lebanese foreign minister Gebran Bassil -a member of the Hizbollah-allied Free Patriotic Movement and the Lebanese president's son-in-law - did not attend the Cairo meeting.

On Sunday Arab League members adopted a resolution saying they would hold the "terrorist Lebanese Hezbollah. responsible for supporting terrorism and terrorist organisations in Arab countries, with modern weapons and ballistic missiles".

Earlier in the day, Iran's foreign Minister Javad Zarif told state media in Antalya, a Turkish resort city, on the sidelines of a meeting with his Russian and Trukish counterparts, "Unfortunately countries like the Saudi regime are pursuing divisions and creating differences and because of this they don't see any results other than divisions".

"We say it in clear terms that Iranian threats have exceeded all boundaries and are pushing the region toward the abyss". It said Arab nations will provide details to the SC of Tehran's violations for arming Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir attends a meeting at the Arab League headquarters in the Egyptian capital Cairo on November 19, 2017.
