Protest planned outside Mar-a-Lago after Trump ends protections for Haitians

Don’t add to Haiti’s misery

Six months after then-Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly announced the extension of Haitian Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for only six months (until January 2018, when he would reevaluate the determination), Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke announced her decision to terminate the designation with a delayed effective date of 18 months. Sending these individuals back at this time is inhumane both to them and their 27,000 US -born children. This will provide time for individuals with TPS to arrange for their departure or to seek an alternative lawful immigration status in the United States, if eligible.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), however, now has until November 23 to make a determination on whether to extend the TPS designation once again.

The U.S. offered Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Haitians after a 7.0-magnitude quake devastated Haiti in January 2010.

On Monday, the Department of Homeland Security announced plans to end a humanitarian program that granted temporary residency permits to those affected by the 2010 Haiti natural disaster. MA has about 4,700 Haitian TPS holders.

State Sen. Linda Dorcena Forry, a Haitian-American Democrat from Boston, said the decision gives Haitians some respite because of the 18-month extension.

The Trump administration is asking almost 60,000 Haitians, who are living in the country legally, to pack their bags or face deportation.

In South Florida, many Haitians work in the healthcare industry.

The Trump administration says it will end the temporary status that shelters almost 60,000 Haitians from deportation, saying the island nation has sufficiently recovered from devastating disasters to take its citizens back.

The 18-month window is meant to give Haitians time to prepare to leave the USA or to seek an alternate legal immigration status.

Monday's announcement comports with a broader administration effort to restrict immigration to the United States and increase efforts to expel those who have no permanent legal status.

"This administration has no plan in place for the children who are US citizens but may now lose their parents and caregivers to deportation", said Amanda Baran of the Washington office of the Immigrant Legal Resource Center, a advocacy group for immigrants.

Officials said Monday that the political climate in Haiti had stabilized. They work. They pay every tax except the federal income tax. There are an estimated 44 thousand TPS recipients from Haiti, El Salvador and Honduras living in Florida. After the United Nations diminished its presence in the country last month, it is more important than ever that the United States support worldwide efforts to enhance and maintain security in Haiti and build up its capacity for ensuring the country's security. For example, Maria Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for the liberal health care advocacy group Health Care for All, said TPS beneficiaries are now eligible to buy insurance on the state's Health Connector. Meanwhile, those who stayed in Haiti are anxious about what will happen to fragile Haitian economy when this decision dents the money sent home from the mainland, which accounts for an estimated 25% of Haiti's GDP.
