Trump Breaks Silence on Roy Moore Allegations

Donald Trump

On Tuesday, when asked about the senatorial race in Alabama between Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Roy Moore, who's been accused of sexual assault by numerous women, President Trump responded, "We don't need a liberal democrat in that seat".

"If you look at what is really going on, and you look at all the things that have happened over the last 48 hours, he totally denies it", said the president. "We don't need a liberal person in there, a Democrat, Jones", Trump said in his most detailed comments on the embattled GOP hopeful moments before the president boarded Marine One outside the White House.

The Republican National Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee have pulled their support for Mr Moore's campaign ahead of the December 12 special election to fill the seat once held by Republican Jeff Sessions, now the U.S. attorney general.

Moore has denied the allegations. "And by the way, he totally denies it".

The issue puts the president in a potentially awkward position, given that the "Access Hollywood" recording almost derailed his campaign and that more than a dozen women have accused him of sexually inappropriate behavior.

The move comes as Alabama GOP special election nominee Roy Moore faces allegations that he pursued sexual and romantic relations with teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

"He says it didn't happen, and you know, you have to listen to him also", he added.

He declined to answer questions about recent accusations lodged against Sen.

Trump was also asked Tuesday about the current political climate, which has seen numerous powerful men in Hollywood, media and politics accused of various shades of sexual misconduct. "I think it's a very special time. And I'm very happy a lot of these things are coming out and I'm very happy, I'm very happy it's being exposed". More women have since spoken out with allegations of their own.

Sessions said he had no reason to doubt Moore's accusers.
