Tuesday in CE: Some Chinese Intern Probably Built Your iPhone X

Workers at a Foxconn facility in 2010

Six high school students told the Financial Times they routinely work 11-hour days assembling the iPhone X at a factory in Zhengzhou, China, which constitutes illegal overtime for student interns under Chinese law.

The "Foxconn City" park outside of Shenzhen came under global scrutiny in 2010 after media reports about 18 suicide attempts and 14 deaths that year.

The students revealed that they were told a three-month stint at the factory was required "work experience" that they had to complete in order to graduate.

In response to the accusations, Apple said in statement that during a recent audit, it had found instances of student interns working overtime at one of its supplier facilities in China. Foxconn said it has taken action to correct the situation and will review the internship program to ensure that it's in compliance and that the event "will not be repeated".

Foxconn and Apple have come under scrutiny for conditions and circumstances of labor in China before.

The report comes less than a month after the launch of the iPhone X. Demand for the phone reportedly exceeds its supply, creating a bottleneck that Apple is trying to overcome by ramping up production. The company said a team of specialists are on site at the facility working with management on systems to ensure appropriate standards are adhered to. The education ministry of the province in which these students studied and worked had asked local vocational schools to send students to Foxconn, according to one of Financial Times' sources.

They said that in their institution received an order to provide students to work at the plant for the production of the iPhone X. More than three thousand students went to work. Today, the Financial Times reports that illegal labour practices persist.

According to CNET, an Apple spokesperson conceded the students should not have been working late. However, this year the company released two new iPhones for the first time, putting extra pressure on its suppliers and assemblers to churn out millions of handsets ahead of the key holiday shopping season. Apple told the media outlet that it was aware that student interns were "working overtime at a supplier factory in China".
