North Korean soldier makes a run for freedom

SEOUL-North Korean border guards were only steps behind a North Korean soldier when they opened fire and one briefly crossed the border pursuing the wounded defector as he dashed to the South Korean side, revealed a video released on Wednesday, Nov. 22, by the U.N. Command (UNC) in Seoul. The shock of soldiers watching the jeep rush by is palpable from the video released Wednesday, and no wonder: They're beginning to realize that one of their comrades is defecting to the South. It is the part of the border where North and South Korean soldiers face each other at their closest distance just metres apart.

North Korean soldiers were only a few meters away when the defector jumped from the vehicle and fled on foot, scrambling up slightly rising ground to cross the border.

During multiple surgical procedures, doctors found dozens of parasites in his digestive tract, shedding light on the humanitarian crisis in North Korea, even for its soldiers. He kicks up leaves, ducking below a tree branch just as the North Korean soldiers skid into view.

Four North Korean soldiers chased after him, shooting at the defector about 40 times and hitting him five times.

The soldier's driving skills were key to his defection across the demilitarized zone (DMZ)'s Joint Security Area (JSA), which has been described as "movie-like."

The North's official Korean Central News Agency said the country has no connection to terrorism.

Two days after President Trump re-designated North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism, the country responded on Wednesday by calling the decision "a serious provocation" and vowed to keep up its nuclear and missile programs as a deterrent against the "hostile" United States.

A UN Command statement said officials notified the North's military of these violations and requested a meeting to discuss the investigation results and measures to prevent future such violations.

He says the soldier watched "Transformers", "CSI", and "Bruce Almighty", and enjoyed the song "Gee" by popular South Korean female band "Girls' Generation".

After undergoing two surgeries last week to fix internal organ damage and other injuries, the soldier has regained consciousness and is no longer relying on a breathing machine.

"The patient is not going to die" said doctor Lee Guk-jong, an experienced surgeon well known in the country for successfully treating the captain of a South Korean ship who suffered six gunshot wounds in a pirate attack in 2011.

"This designation will impose further sanctions and penalties on North Korea and related persons, and supports our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime", said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin.
