PUBG Corp signs a contract with Tencent for PUBG service in China

China isn't locking out PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds yet

Tencent has secured the rights to publish PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds but there will be changes to the game.

South Korea-based PUBG Corp., a spinoff of Bluehole that now exclusively administers "PUBG", has signed a publishing agreement with Tencent to release the "Battle Royale" shooter to the Chinese market.

Previously, China was eyeballing a ban for the popular Battle Royale game due to its refusal to adhere to the country's strict social values. "PUBG" will only officially launch in the country, however, after more than a few alterations. As translated by Reuters (and grabbed by Polygon), the game will in fact be modified to take "socialist core values, Chinese traditional culture and moral rules" into consideration.

Chinese content authorities were said to have considered blocking "PUBG's" release because the game "severely deviates from socialist core values". "Tencent will localize and operate the game by catering to the preferences of Chinese gamers". More information about game changes is expected to come soon.

A PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds spokesperson did confirm to MCV's sister site Esports Pro, however, that Tencent does not now own a stake in either Bluehole or the more recently formed PUBG Corp. The game also won "Best Multiplayer Game" and "PC Game of the Year" at this year's Golden Joysticks Awards. Recently, NetEase added in-game banners saying things like "safeguard national security, safeguard world peace" in a public show of support for China's ever-tightening grip on entertainment media.
