Google adds new battery life prediction process in its Pixel phones

Google Pixel 2 XL vs One Plus 5T

"As you might expect, this wasn't always very accurate", wrote a product manager called Michelle from Google's NYC office.

Google has now switched to an on-device model that will continually monitor your battery life over time.

The update, which should be quietly rolling out to your Pixel phone now, is meant to make battery life estimates on the handset more accurate, and as a result much more useful. If you have sipped around 10 percent of your battery life per hour over the past few hours, for example, the phone would assume that the next hour of usage will be similar - another 10 percent.

That way it can personalize predictions based on how an individual uses the phone, factoring frequent and predictable usage spikes such as might be observable if that person likes watching Netflix or YouTube during the daily commute home. Here, users will see a graphical representation of of battery usage. People can view the percent of battery left as well as how many hours the device is expected to last.

According to Android Authority, the feature is already working for on Pixel 2 and Nexus 6P smartphones that run Android 8.1 Oreo developers preview (DP).

The new feature is targeted at Pixel users for now but we can expect it to trickle down to more Android devices in the future.

"Finally, tell us if you have more ideas about how you would like your phone to inform you or warn you about battery", read the post. The app also allows you to turn on or off the battery saver, auto-brightness and to display the battery percentage option using a toggle.

To get an assessment of high and low control by the new Smart battery feature, clients can tap on the full-size battery symbol which will then illustrate distinctive user prototype for battery usage.
