Oxford Circus Tube incident

Panic on London’s Oxford Street after reports of shooting

Police had received multiple reports of shots fired at 4:38 p.m. (11:38 a.m. ET) on Oxford Street and at the Oxford Circus underground train station.

The incident happened as throngs of shoppers flocked to the area for Black Friday retail sales.

Hundreds of people have been relocated from the Oxford Circus tube station due to reports of gunshots. "Avoid area if possible".

This includes the Royal Variety Performance at the nearby London Palladium going ahead as planned, although the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had been delayed.

Armed officers of the metropolitan police and transport police were deployed at the spot even as three fire engines and 15 firefighters were rushed to the site. "Police have responded as if the incident is terrorist related. Officers are on scene and dealing (with it)", the Metropolitan Police said on their official Twitter feed. "No casualties, evidence of any shots fired or any suspects were located by police". Thousands of people ran in panic or took shelter in stores along busy Oxford Street.

"At this stage, we are examining the circumstances of the incident which resulted in the station being evacuated".

"A police presence remains in the area to support the public".
