UCLA hires Chip Kelly

Josh Rosen Should Sit Out the UCLA Bowl Game and Chip Kelly Should Want Him To Move On

The former OR and National Football League head coach is finalizing an agreement to become the next coach at UCLA, Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel tweeted on Saturday, with a deal expected to be reached "by the end of the weekend".

Kelly also had been considering the vacant Florida job, sources previously told ESPN. "I am thrilled to welcome Chip Kelly to Westwood", UCLA AD Dan Guerrero said. Prior to that, of course, he was one of the most innovative college coaches of the past decade.

More at UCLA Athletics. "I'd like to thank Josh Rebholz, Casey Wasserman and Troy Aikman for their input during this process, as their candor, experience and support were invaluable".

Kelly will be formally introduced as the Bruins' head coach on the UCLA campus Monday afternoon.

"It is an absolute honor to join the Bruin family, and I am grateful to Chancellor (Gene) Block and to Dan Guerrero for this incredible opportunity" Kelly said.

Kelly has been named the new coach of UCLA, replacing Jim Mora who was sacked in November. He had been with the Bruins for six seasons. Kelly was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010, and Associated Press Coach of the Year in 2010. At the college level, Kelly went 46-7 during four years at OR that included a trip to the BCS National Championship game after going 12-0 in 2010.

He began his head coaching career at the University of OR in 2009, leading the Ducks to a 10-3 record and a trip to the Rose Bowl in his first year at the helm.

But that tenure was not without controversy as the NCAA Committee on Infractions handed down penalties to the program in 2013 because of recruiting violations, including three years of probation and an 18-month show-cause penalty for Kelly. The penalty for those sanctions ran out in 2014. The Eagles made the playoffs in Kelly's first season there in 2013, but he was sacked after going 6-9 in 2015 with a talented team that was widely viewed to have underachieved.

The 49ers now owe Kelly approximately $15 million, sources told ESPN's Darren Rovell.

However, in the end, Kelly decided on UCLA in part because he was more comfortable living on the west coast than in Gainesville. He turns 54 on November 25.

The hire is huge for the program which hasn't won a conference title in about two decades.
