Facing Fresh Bali Volcano Eruption Red Warning Issued to Airlines

Bali volcano live webcam: Watch Mount Agung ERUPT as tourist hotspot issues 'RED WARNING'

The majority of worldwide flights out of Bali have been cancelled after several volcanic eruptions on Mount Agung sent plumes of ash into the skies on Saturday and Sunday.

Satellite imagery Sunday showed the volcanic ash drifting east and southeastward towards Lombok Island.

Qantas, Virgin and Dutch airline KLM soon followed Jetstar's lead in cancelling flights.

While the airport remains in operation, several major carriers have cancelled flights.

The island's main airport is for now operating normally, but some airlines have cancelled flights.

"All flights are back to normal", said Herson, head of the local airport authority, who uses one name.

There have been no new evacuations in Bali and a six kilometre exclusion zone around the volcano has not been extended. Chances are that the eruption intensifies in the coming days, but just how much and how long it will last, and how risky it might become, is impossible to say at the moment. So far, the eruption is only moderate in scale and has not caused significant damage, and Indonesia's civil protection urges the population to remain calm and not panic.

Government volcanologist Gede Suantika said a red-yellow light visible in ash above the mountain was the reflection of lava in the crater. Increased volcanic activity had prompted fears a major eruption was imminent.

Bali is a popular tourist destination for many in the region, with thousands traveling to the island for end of year celebrations. "So we are very disappointed about that".

The National Agency for Disaster Management issued a Level 3 alert, recommending no public activities within 6 to 7.5 kilometers (3.5 to 4.5 miles) from the peak.

Some 25,000 people have been prevented from returning to their homes since the volcano awoke in September.

The volcano's last major eruption in 1963 killed about 1,100 people.
