Industrial Strategy sets out plan to strengthen secondary materials market

Reuters

CIWM today welcomed the launch of the Industrial Strategy White Paper and within it references to a range of issues of deep concern to our sector. A quartet of "sector deals" were announced - for the life sciences, construction, artificial intelligence and automotive sectors - but not offshore wind. The green paper was announced to much fanfare earlier this year, however our recent Future Attitudes study, which surveyed over a thousand senior SME decision makers across the United Kingdom, revealed an astonishing lack of awareness about the Strategy, with fewer than three in ten (29 per cent) small and medium-sized enterprises claiming to have heard about it...

The proposed investment is in line with its Research Laboratories arm's continued pursuit of new innovative scientific discovery and collaboration and follows similar investments in new biomedical centres in the San Francisco Bay Area and Cambridge Massachusetts.

"A new United Kingdom location will enable us to build on our proud legacy of invention and be an important contributor to the vibrant and rapidly growing United Kingdom life sciences community, while providing access for more collaborations within the European life science ecosystem", noted MSD's Research Laboratories president Roger Perlmutter.

Speaking at the annual ESA lunch in London on 24 November, Davies said: "We have been finding our way into the Beis to make the case for the sector and engage proactively with the industrial strategy as it is formulated, funded and rolled out".

"The Industrial Strategy is an unashamedly ambitious vision for the future of our country, laying out how we tackle our productivity challenge, earn our way in the future, and improve living standards across the country".

The white paper follows extensive engagement by government with industry, academia and business bodies who submitted nearly 2,000 responses to the green paper consultation earlier in 2017.

The focus on Place as another of the five foundations is also an element CIWM called for in its response to the Green Paper.

Meanwhile further details have emerged regarding the government's £400 million EV charging infrastructure fund which was pledged during last week's Budget.

The White Paper commits the government to increasing Higher Education Innovation Funding, which supports university engagement with businesses, to a total of £250 million a year by 2020-21.

An additional £406 million will be used to address the shortage of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills.

In the strategy, the government identifies four Grand Challenges; global trends that will shape our rapidly changing future and which the United Kingdom must embrace and lead to ensure we harness all the economic and social opportunities they bring.

"The Industrial Strategy can have a transformative impact on the UK's economy, driving low carbon innovation and the continued growth of jobs, skills and supply chains", Molho said.

Her 255-page white paper - which adopts a hands-on approach to business that had largely been abandoned since the time of Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s - is being seen as an attempt to define her administration beyond Brexit, while also charting a new vision for the United Kingdom as it prepares to leave the European Union. It's a sector that holds enormous potential for technological breakthroughs, job creation and boosting productivity.

Mr Clark said he wanted to turn around years of weak productivity by putting Britain at the forefront of Artificial Intelligence, clean energy, mobility and innovation. And it needs to give people clean air by speeding up the end of diesel vehicles.

An independent Industrial Strategy Council will be launched next year to hold Ministers to account over progress.
