Trump makes 'Pocahontas' slur at Native American ceremony

Scaramucci defends Trump's'Pocahontas swipe

"I just want to thank you because you are very, very special people".

Warren, who is running for reelection in 2018, sent an email to supporters on Monday night saying, "You might have heard that Donald Trump likes to call me 'Pocahontas.' He does it on Twitter, at rallies, and even in official White House meetings". "Although, we have a representative in Congress who has been here a long time, longer than you, they call her 'Pocahontas'".

Referring to the concept of Trump's words being a "racial slur", Sanders said: "I think that's a ridiculous response". But, you Honor and Respect them with a...racist, derogatory comment about Pocahontas.

"The Navajo Code Talkers are not pawns to advance a personal grudge or promote false narratives", Crotty said in a statement released Monday. "This is a young lady, a Native American woman that played a critical role in the life of this nation, and to use that person in that way is unnecessary and is being culturally insensitive".

The White House said yesterday that President Donald Trump wasn't making a racial slur when he referred to Senator Elizabeth Warren as "Pocahantas" while speaking with Navajo military veterans who served as code-talkers in World War Two.

"You were here long before any of us were here", Trump said standing in the Oval Office, The Hill reports.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders doubled down on that sentiment at Monday's briefing.

Trump did actually praise the bravery of the code talkers at the event: "You are special people". "What Trump displayed today was an embarrassment to our values and a disgraceful insult to the heroes of our history". And to put in a slur that has become racial - Pocahontas - didn't belong there.

Warren herself additionally responded to Trump's dig, telling MSNBC, "It was deeply unfortunate that the President of the United States can not even make it through a ceremony honoring these heroes without throwing out a racial slur".

Warren's claims of Native-American heritage originated during her Senate campaign.
