Sunni Waqf Board disassociates itself from Sibal

BJP Congress in war of words over what Kapil Sibal told Supreme Court on Babri Masjid case

In a fresh twist in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute, the Sunni Waqf Board on Wednesday said that they differ with senior lawyer Kapil Sibal's arguments in the Supreme Court seeking postponement of hearing in the matter till the 2019 polls, saying they favour an immediate solution to the long-standing dispute.

As the Sunni Wakf Board separated itself from stance of its advocate Kapil Sibal on linking the 2019 national election with the Ram Mandir issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was all praise for the Sunni Wakf Board.

However, the Supreme Court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Ashok Bhushan and S Abdul Nazeer adjourned the hearing in the Ayodhya case for February 8, 2018.

Shah further hit out at the Congress Party for deferring the case when everyone wanted an early resolution of the issue. We want a solution to the issue at the earliest. "It is our appeal to the soon-to-be-crowned Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who is visiting temples in Gujarat these days, to clear his stand on the Shri Ram Mandir and explain to the people why is Sibal praying for a delayed verdict just when the translation work of voluminous court documents is over", he said. "No such directive had been given by the board", Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board Zafar Farooqui said. What does he mean, when he says don't hear the matter till 2019 as it will have an impact outside? The BJP is playing the role of "Manthara', raking up Kapil Sibal's stand on the hearing", Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said, while addressing the media.

The Congress has retorted by saying that Shah's statement was aimed at diverting attention from real issues in the Gujarat polls. "And that the court will decide", Sibal added. "Modi government's law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has himself said in Parliament and outside Parliament that the BJP will accept the Supreme Court order on the Ram temple construction", he said. "Or, is it the case that the board and the Congress are working in tandem?" he asked.

"The PM did not check the fact that actually I never represented the Sunni Waqf Board in the Supreme Court and yet he thanked them".
