BC NDP government to announce Site C decision Monday morning

With a group called the Peace Valley Landowners Association, Boon, with his wife Arlene are among the groups arguing that Site C's power isn't needed and will come at too high a price in terms of environmental impact and loss of prime agricultural land. BC Hydro says the dam, slated to be built on the Peace River near Fort St. John in northern B.C., would produce about 4,600 gigawatt hours of electricity each year - enough to power about 400,000 homes.

"This government promised to be better than the B.C. Liberals".

But Premier Philippe Couillard recently said the era of construction of large hydroelectric dams is over, and that the cost of renewables such as solar power is a "great revolution to which we in Quebec are going to participate".

"Megaproject mismanagement by the old government has left B.C.in a bad situation", said Mr. Horgan in news release.

Following the NDP's announcement, the West Moberly First Nations and Prophet River First Nation announced they intend to seek a court injunction to halt construction while they start a civil action for treaty infringement.

VICTORIA-The B.C. government had no choice but to complete the Site C hydroelectric dam rather than absorb a $4 billion hit to its bottom line by cancelling the project, which would have jeopardized plans for more spending on schools, hospitals and bridges, Premier John Horgan said Monday.

The Site C project is now two years into construction and $2.1 billion has already been spent.

"It is fiscally reckless to continue with Site C and my colleagues and I did everything we could to make this clear to the government", Weaver says in a statement.

Some declared long-time NDP supporters posted messages on social media pledging to withhold donations as well as their vote unless Site C was cancelled. "We can only make the best decision for the future". I'm convinced more than ever that the Ajax open-pit copper mine will be rejected, not only for environmental reasons, but because the NDP, having said yes to one mega project, can feel a little more at ease saying no to another. He has said he changed his mind due to snowballing costs and unresolved First Nations opposition to the project.

Although "disheartened" by the NDP government's decision, Weaver, whose three-member caucus has the power to bring the NDP government down, has given no indication he plans to do so. But the project was spiked twice by independent reviews.

"It sets a pretty strong tone from them", West Moberly Chief Roland Willson said in an interview after the decision.

The government asked the B.C. Utilities Commission to determine if Site C would be finished by 2024 and on budget, while providing advice on proceeding with the project, suspending construction until 2024, or terminating it.

"First Nations in the region have entrenched constitutional rights", Horgan stated in that interview. "On this issue, the NDP government's approach has turned out to be no different whatsoever".
