Jenkins, husband of Japanese ex-abductee to N. Korea, dies at 77

North Korea is in the running to build the deadliest nuke

The broadcaster stated that James Joseph Dresnok, another American who had deserted into North Korea three years before Jenkins, died in August after "pledging loyalty to the 'great leader Kim Jong-Un'".

In 1980, he married Hitomi Soga, who was kidnapped by North Korean agents in the Cold-War era.

Jenkins, who feared being killed on patrol or being sent to Vietnam, had planned to seek asylum at the Russian embassy and return to the United States in a prisoner swap but he came to bitterly regret the 1965 desertion, the BBC reports.

While in North Korea he taught English to soldiers and portrayed an evil USA spy in a propaganda film.

She was allowed to leave North Korea for Japan in 2002 and Jenkins followed her two years later with their two Korean-born daughters.

Later, at a court martial in Japan in 2004, he explained his reasons for deserting, saying he wanted to avoid hazardous duty in South Korea and escape combat in Vietnam.

Soga, 58, had already returned to Japan two years before with a group of other abductees. "I don't think they [North Korea] have the nerve to come and get me, but they could assassinate me with a bullet through the head from a distance".

He said he had planned to go to Russian Federation and turn himself in, and had not expected North Korea to keep him.

At first she refused his marriage proposals, but she eventually agreed after he convinced her that, even if they did not love each other yet, marrying him would at least provide her with the certainty of being safe rather than not knowing where she'd be taken next. "You say one thing bad about Kim Il-sung and then you dig your own hole, because you're gone", Jenkins said during his court-martial.

Jenkins and his family lived in Soga's hometown of Sado, where he was a popular worker at a local souvenir shop and could often be seen posing in photos with visiting tourists. Two years later, Jenkins and the couple's two daughters were allowed to join her.

Jenkins said the he was in a virtual prison during the first eight years in North Korea, living in a small room with other three other US defectors and forced to learn the works of North Korean founder Kim Il-sung, NPR said. He was accused of absconding and fleeing to North Korea.

"North Korea wants me dead", he told the paper.
