Numbers of the Day: 6700 killed

Myanmar's Rohingya ethnic minority

The Myanmar military blames the violence on "terrorists" and has denied any wrongdoing.

Reuters global communications chief Abbe Serphos said: "We are urgently seeking more information about the circumstances of their arrest and their current situation".

The aid group's survey found that at least 9000 Rohingya died in Myanmar between 25 August and 24 September.

An global aid group estimates that at least 6,700 Rohingya Muslims were killed in Myanmar's Rakhine State in violence that broke out there in late August, according to a statement made available Thursday.

Previously, the armed forces stated that around 400 people had been killed, majority described as Muslim terrorists.

The crackdown, which followed raids against Myanmar police and security posts by Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) insurgents on August 25, pushed 655,000 members of the Rohingya Muslim minority to seek shelter in neighboring Bangladesh during the following months, according to the latest estimates published by the United Nations on Thursday.

Myanmar's army has claimed 400 have died since the start of the crisis.

A Turkish aid group has sent four tons of food and dug 50 wells for Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, according to the group.

They have been stripped of their citizenship, denied nearly all rights, and labelled "stateless". The government does not use the term Rohingya but calls them Bengali Muslims. The campaign, launched in August in response to attacks on police outposts, has been condemned by the United Nations as "ethnic cleansing" and those fleeing have described widespread rights abuses by security forces.

Medecins Sans Frontieres, also known by its English name Doctors Without Borders, said its staff met and spoke with Rohingya refugees now sheltered in camps in neighboring Bangladesh and discovered a "staggering" numbers of victims and "horrific" stories of the death of family members in the violence.

Gunshots were the cause of death in most cases.

MSF said that among children below the age of five, more than 59 per cent who were killed during that period were reportedly shot, 15 per cent burnt to death in their homes, 7 per cent beaten to death and 2 per cent died due to land mine blasts.

MSF said the numbers of deaths are likely to be an underestimation "as we have not surveyed all refugee resettlements in Bangladesh because the surveys don't account for the families who never made it out of Burma".

The MSF noted that considering the unsafe environment for Rohingya refugees in Rakhine region, the agreement for their return signed between Bangladesh and Myanmar is premature.

"Currently people are still fleeing from Myanmar to Bangladesh and those who do manage to cross the border still report being subject to violence in recent weeks", Wong said.
