NK rejects claim it is developing biological weapons

Denial – North Korea has reportedly denied the allegations that it is testing warheads loaded with anthrax More

The terrifying revelations come a day after the White House published its National Security Strategy, a document that said Pyongyang is "pursuing chemical and biological weapons which could also be delivered by missile".

The report warns, 'According to a South Korean Defense White Paper, North Korea began weaponizing biological agents in the 1980s.

North Korea has 13 types of pathogens that can be weaponized, which includes anthrax and clostridium botulinum, according to a 2016 report by the Korean Institute for Defence Analyses.

Anthrax contaminates the body when spores enter it, multiplying and spreading an illness that could be fatal.

North Korea has a store of between 2,500 and 5,000 tons of chemical weapons, South Korea has previously said, adding that it was capable of producing biological agents like anthrax and smallpox.

Washington and Seoul have carried out joint military drills simulating and combating an attack of a biological nature.

Details of the draft given to China last week were not immediately available, but the United States is keen to step up global sanctions to pressure North Korea to give up a weapons programme aimed at developing a nuclear-tipped missile capable of hitting the United States.

The threat of war with North Korea intensified after the country's state television reported last month that it had launched a new ICBM, dubbed the Hwasong 15, which is a nuclear weapon capable of reaching reach the entire US mainland.

Both have threatened military action against the other, and fears of a conflict breaking out have risen, particularly in nearby Japan and South Korea. His claims are yet to be verified.

In its response, North Korea said the claims in the report were "the US stereotyped method to cook up untruths as truths, stubbornly insisting that black is white and fabricating anything for satisfying their aggressive greed".

"It is the USA that conducts military aggressions and cruise missile attacks on sovereign states in broad daylight while faking "possession of WMD" and "use of chemical weapons" of those countries", said the statement.

It is not only Trump railing against the North Korean despot.

Given the high level of tension between the United States and North Korea, such reports and rumors are bound to emerge. North Korea is the only nation among the combatants that still clings to these claims.

The worrying news comes as South Korean President Moon Jae-in is seeking to soothe relations with China and Kim Jong-un before the Winter Olympics starts in his home country in February.
