Israel deports two Turkish citizens detained in Jerusalem protests

Hamas leader responds to UN vote by calling for day of blood in West Bank

Guatemala will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, becoming the first country to follow U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial stance to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, according to an announcement by the Central American country's President Jimmy Morales Sunday.

In November 2016, Morales was welcomed in Israel by government officials including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Reuven Rivlin and the Knesset speaker, Yuli Edelstein, all of who thanked Guatemala for its early support of Israel.

Guatemala, in the early hours of Monday became the second country, to declare its decision to move its Tel Aviv embassy following Trump's lead.

Guatemala was one of the few countries to vote with the US against passing a non-binding resolution at the United Nations declaring Trump's Jerusalem decision "null and void".

"God bless both our countries - Israel and Guatemala!"

Israel's ambassador to Guatemala, Matty Cohen, said on Army Radio that no date had been set for the embassy move, "but it will happen after" the United States relocates its own embassy to Jerusalem.

Guatemala and neighbouring Honduras were two of only a handful of countries to join Israel and the United States, which has pledged to move its embassy to Jerusalem, in voting against the U.N. resolution.

President Trump's December 6 announcement, that the USA would change decades of US policy and recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, was met with clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces.

The announcement makes Guatemala the first country to follow the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem.

Israel seized the eastern part of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War and later annexed it in a move not recognized by the worldwide community.

The resolution passed at the United Nations declared the U.S. action on Jerusalem "null and void".

The Palestinians and much of the worldwide community have said the status of Jerusalem is to be settled as part of peace negotiations. The 128-9 vote was a victory for Palestinians, but fell short of the total they had predicted.

Thirty-five nations, including Australia, abstained and 21 stayed away from the vote.
