US To Decide On Whether To Withhold $255m In Aid To Pakistan

Baloch leaders welcome Trump's tweet, say 'US must disengage with Pakistan'

Trump had earlier sent an angry, early morning tweet criticizing Pakistan. The U.S. has long accused Istanbul of allowing militants to operate relatively freely in Pakistan's border regions to carry out operations in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Donald Trump said the USA had foolishly given Pakistan more that billion in aid since 2012. He further accused Islamabad of harbouring the terrorists that the United States was hunting in neighbouring Afghanistan. Pakistani security forces rescued American hostage Caitlan Coleman, her Canadian husband, Joshua Boyle, and their three children born during the five years they spent in captivity.

It was not immediately clear what had prompted the president to comment on Pakistan.

The reaction of his audience was notable, analysts said, since the Pentagon has historically been one of Pakistan's defenders in Washington because of its longstanding ties to the Pakistani military, the New York Times reported.

Reacting to the ongoing protests in Iran, in which now at least 12 people have been killed in clashes with security services, Trump said Iran is "failing at every level".

Pakistan will "let the world know the ... difference between facts and fiction", Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif tweeted, promising to respond to Trump "shortly".

It said US officials had sought but been denied access to a member of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network captured in Pakistan who potentially could provide information about at least one American hostage.

"We have already refused to the U.S. mantra of "do more" for it (US)". "We don't need your aid, our sacrifices should be acknowledged".

After a meeting with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah at the presidential palace in Kabul late on December 21, Vice President Mike Pence had sharp words for Islamabad, saying that while Pakistan had much to gain from working with the United States, it also has much to lose by harboring "criminals and terrorists".

Trump said then that Pakistan "gives safe haven to agents of chaos, violence and terror".

In November, the White House condemned the release of USA -wanted militant Hafiz Saeed and said a refusal to re-arrest him would damage bilateral ties.

The President last August demanded Pakistan "change immediately" its practice of giving safe haven to terror groups including the Taliban, which have assaulted USA forces based in neighboring Afghanistan.
