Cardinals QB Carson Palmer announces retirement

Cardinals Head Coaching Candidates: Top 10 Replacements For Bruce Arians (If He Retires)

Palmer, who turned 38 last week, played the last five seasons of his 15-year career with the Arizona Cardinals, leading them to two postseason appearances in a late-career resurgence under head coach Bruce Arians, who announced his retirement a day earlier. The answer was nearly always the same: "You just know", Palmer wrote.

With Palmer opting to retire, and Bruce Arians retiring as head coach, the Cardinals could be ready to usher in a new era.

"For me, that time is now".

The No. 1 overall pick in 2003 out of USC, Palmer spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, where he went to the playoffs twice and the Pro Bowl twice.

"What I'll never forget are the relationships - not just the wonderful teammates and coaches, but all of those countless people at the Bengals, Raiders and Cardinals who work behind the scenes to make this whole thing run". He suffered a broken arm in the loss to the Rams. The former Steelers defensive coordinator (1992-94) took over the Green Bay defense in 2009 helping the Packers win Super Bowl XLV with a top-five ranked total defense.

Palmer finishes his career 12th All-Time in passing yards (46,247) and touchdowns (294).

"I'll especially miss the grind", Palmer wrote. "The mental and physical preparation it takes to compete - week in and week out, year in and year out - is draining and grueling but has always been my favorite part".

Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert split playing time for the Cardinals for the rest of the season. Arizona could look to sign a quarterback in free agency or explore their options in the draft.

Ian Rapoport of reported Tuesday that the Cardinals plan to interview defensive coordinator James Bettcher for the vacant head coaching position. He also finished with a 62.5 completion percentage and an 87.9 passer rating.

"In the end, it's not what happens on the football field that sticks with you", Palmer wrote. "What I will never forget are the relationships".
