Fired engineer who wrote sexist manifesto sues Google

James Damore right a former Google engineer fired in 2017 after writing a memo about the biological differences between men and women speaks at a news conference while his attorney Harmeet Dhillon listens Monday Jan. 8 2018 in San Francisco. Damo

The lawsuit alleges that Google employees who expressed views deviating from the majority at Google on politics or on employment practices including "diversity hiring policies, bias sensitivity, and social justice" were "singled out, mistreated, and systematically punished and terminated from Google", in violation of their legal rights.

The Dhillon Law Group livestreamed a press conference about the lawsuit on Facebook today.

A former engineer who wrote a sexist manifesto disparaging Google's efforts to close the gender gap is now suing, claiming the search giant discriminates against conservative white men.

The complaint also notes that progressive employees were allowed to openly sympathize with, and support the violent "Antifa" movement.

The company uses illegal hiring quotas to achieve a certain percentage of women and minority employees, and "Google's management goes to extreme - and illegal - lengths to encourage hiring managers to take protected categories such as race and/or gender into consideration as determinative hiring factors, to the detriment of Caucasian and male employees", the complaint stated.

James Damore was fired from his engineering job at Google a year ago after he wrote a memo that criticized the company's diversity efforts and argued that the low number of women in engineering positions was a result of biological differences. He is joined in the lawsuit by another former Google engineer, David Gudeman.

As BuzzFeed News reports, several women have filed discrimination suits against Google, alleging that the company paid them less than their male counterparts, and faulting the company for asking the female hires about prior pay.

He said he felt his suit would "really help make Google a truly inclusive place". The company's CEO, Sundar Pichai, told Bloomberg that Damore "violate [d] our Code of Conduct and cross [ed] the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace".

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Damore and Gudeman's lawsuit on Monday.
