Red Cross urgently needs blood donations

American Red Cross In Need Of Blood Donors, Officials Say

CLEVELAND- The American Red Cross is facing a winter blood shortage and is pleading for blood and platelet donations.

The winter season is usually tough, but severe winter storms have been making it even harder, forcing the Red Cross to cancel blood drives throughout the region.

Donations are needed right now so that patients can continue to receive lifesaving treatments.

As members of the American Red Cross start the new year, they unfortunately face a hard time for blood collections during the challenging winter months.

Additionally, hectic holiday schedules in November and December contributed to almost 550 fewer blood drives hosted by volunteer sponsor groups and coordinators than the two previous months.

Michigan Blood stated there is now an urgent need for all blood types and a special need for O-negative blood, the universal donor, which has dangerously low levels.

Every blood donation can be a life-saver for people in hospitals across the state, Michigan Blood stated.

Donors can schedule an appointment by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-733-2767.

The Red Cross encourages individuals to make a donation appointment and to complete a RapidPass online health history questionnaire to help speed up the donation process. However, Kulman says anyone who is sick should delay donating blood until they feel better.

OBI is urging donors to give blood at the donor centers or mobile blood drives. By giving platelets regularly, donors can help patients kick cancer and recover from other life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

The agency also needs type O negative blood, which is a universal blood type that anyone can receive.

Type B negative can be transfused to Rh-positive or negative patients. Officials say it is especially necessary in emergencies when a blood type isn't known.
