Vivo to soon launch a phone with under-display fingerprint sensor

Vivo reveals the first in-display fingerprint scanner

As we are moving towards smartphones with near bezel-less displays, consumers have been expecting under display fingerprint sensors to become a thing as many are not in favour of rear mounted sensors. This may be true as this phone was earlier spotted online with an under-display fingerprint sensor.

Back in June previous year, at MWC Shanghai 2017, chip maker Qualcomm introduced on-screen fingerprint scanner, and later, Chinese smartphone brand Vivo also showed off a prototype smartphone with on-screen fingerprint scanning technology. This smartphone will be launched in the first half of this year.

Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has released a teaser revealing the company's under-display fingerprint sensor which the company is going to launch soon. The fingerprint scanner will be placed between the glass panel and the OLED panel: when the finger will touch the glass panel, the OLED panel will illuminate the finger and the small chip will process the beams of light emitted. These displays are typically edge-to-edge with a wide 18:9 aspect ratio. Vivo was not alone as another company, Doogee, has incorporated a fingerprint sensor underneath a 6.2 inch display on the Doogee V. As the industry steadily moves into a new era of full-screen displays, vivo can now take advantage of it with the in-display fingerprint technology, without sacrificing the user experience.

At the time when Face recognition technology is replacing the fingerprint sensor, Vivo wants to revolutionize the fingerprint sensor again. Vivo says that you will, of course, be able to use the in-display fingerprint scanner for payments as well, as it's just as secure as a regular fingerprint scanner.

The recent fingerprint scanning technology aims to offer users a better and a more convenient way in terms of fingerprint authentication experiences. The only difference I experienced was that the Vivo handset was slower - both to learn the contours of my fingerprint and to unlock once I put my thumb on the on-screen fingerprint prompt - but not so much as to be problematic.
