Carabao Cup Semi-Final, Chelsea vs Arsenal

Five lessons for Arsenal from their last five meetings with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Arsenal have dropped Alexis Sanchez for Wednesday's first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie with Chelsea. Alvaro Morata will start, dropping Batshuayi to the bench.

Antonio Conte's side dominated possession for long periods at Stamford Bridge - where the Video Assistant Referee system (VAR) was in operation - but lacked the killer instinct required to take a step towards the final.

Victor Moses twice went close before the half-hour mark, firing a well-hit shot right at David Ospina and clattering one off the Arsenal keeper's post minutes later as the goalless stalemate continued.

At the other end, Thibaut Courtois parried away an Alex Iwobi snapshot and Maitland-Niles, with roles suddenly reversed, went down under a challenge from Moses.

The best chance of the evening fell to former Gunners man Cesc Fabregas, who wasted a great header after being picked out in the box by Cesar Azpilicueta.

Alonso nearly opened the scoring himself shortly afterwards when he was a whisker away from glancing Fabregas's corner home, and Morata could not bring the ball under his spell when it fell to him inside the six-yard box either.

The first saw the Spaniard turn into space before quickly releasing a 25-yard effort which Ospina needed to parry away, before Morata then rolled Shkodran Mustafi to race through on goal and squeeze his finish under the onrushing Arsenal keeper, only to see it trickle into the side-netting.

Chelsea and Arsenal met earlier this month at Emirates Stadium in Premier League play, with the two London sides playing to a 2-2 draw.

Arsene Wenger has been banned for three matches and fined £40,000 for his comments in the referee's changing room following Arsenal's draw against West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Eve.

Arsenal and Chelsea finished the match with a 0-0 draw ahead of the second leg on January 24.
