SpaceX defends rocket performance after loss of U.S. spy satellite

SpaceX Launch

By all indications, SpaceX pulled off the Sunday launch of the secret Zuma spacecraft with no hitches, sending the second stage well on its way to the Low Earth Orbit as the first reusable stage nailed a pretty good landing eight minutes later in Cape Canaveral.

Shotwell said in her Tuesday statement that the company "does not anticipate any impact on the upcoming launch schedule" at the end of the month since the data reviewed so far "indicates that no design, operational or other changes are needed".

A SpaceX representative told Business Insider, "We do not comment on missions of this nature, but as of right now reviews of the data indicate Falcon 9 performed nominally".

SpaceX, the company commissioned to launch the highly classified satellite, codenamed Zuma, said that its Falcon 9 rocket had performed normally and that the segment carrying Zuma had deployed successfully.

"If we or others find otherwise based on further review, we will report it immediately", Shotwell said.

A classified payload called Zuma, built by Northrup Grumman for the U.S. government, was being delivered to orbit.

Tim Paynter, a spokesman for Northrop Grumman Corp, which was commissioned by the Defense Department to choose the launch contractor, declined to comment on the payload adapter, saying "we can not comment on classified missions".

The Zuma mission was a clear success on at least one count: SpaceX successfully landed the rocket's first stage for reuse in a future launch, a key step in its goal to drive down the cost of access to space. Another Falcon 9, meanwhile, is scheduled to fly in three weeks with a communication satellite for Luxembourg.

The secretive nature of the Zuma payload makes reliable details about the mission hard to come by or verify. Government and industry officials have said that the payload failed to separate from the second stage of the rocket and plunged back into the atmosphere. But as of now, Northrop Grumman has denied to make any comment regarding the Zuma mission and its fate.

As they battled with SpaceX, ULA's executives launched a "results over rhetoric" campaign, highlighting the company's long heritage in space. "We can not comment on classified missions". The Falcon Heavy is perhaps the most important rocket ever created by SpaceX, as it is the one planned to be used for missions to the moon and Mars. Falcon Heavy has been rolled out to launchpad LC-39A for a static fire later this week, to be followed shortly thereafter by its maiden flight.

While the landing was nearly flawless, the company did not go on to confirm that the mission was a success, at least officially, according to Ars Technica. However, the company has completed more than ten successful supply missions to ISS.

Last year was a banner year for the private space company with 18 launches. "But on this mission the customer provided its own payload adapter, so separation may be its problem and not SpaceX's problem", Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, tweeted on Monday night.
